Computer Engineering education at ITU began in 1980 within the Department of Control and Computer Engineering under the Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering. In response to rapid developments in the field, an initiative led by Prof. Dr. Eşref Adalı in 1996 resulted in the establishment of the Department of Computer Engineering in 1997.

In 2003, a dual-degree undergraduate program in Information Systems Engineering was launched in collaboration with Binghamton University, part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system.

In 2010, following institutional approvals, the Faculty of Computer and Informatics was officially established, becoming the first of its kind in Türkiye. Prof. Dr. Eşref Adalı served as the founding dean between 2010 and 2015.

The Computer Engineering Program has received international accreditation based on ABET EC2000 criteria in 2005, 2011, and 2018. In 2020, the Department of Artificial Intelligence and Data Engineering was established to further strengthen education and research in emerging fields.

Today, the Faculty continues to educate highly qualified engineers and contribute to academic research and the development of the information technology sector through strong collaborations with industry and public institutions.
